Oregon Megan's Law

Getting its name from Megan Kanka, Megan's Law was passed into federal law in 1995. Megans Law makes it mandatory for each state put a method in place for notifying local residents when a sexual offender is relocated into their area.
Megan was only seven years old when a repeat sex offender that was living accross the street from her family, kidnapped, violently rapped, and murdered her. It was determined that if her family or other community members had been alerted that a repeated sexual predator was housed in their community, this assult would have been avoided. On that train of thought, the U.S. Congress legislated the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994", nicknamed Megan's Law, without any protests.
Since the law has been put into effect, Oregon has strived to protect its residents the most up to date information relating to previous sexual offenders and their whereabouts. The legislation has proven that though sexual assaults are still a occuring in the United States, crimes committed by prior offenders are on a downturn.
